The History Behind This Curiosity
A Little History: Lledo and Days Gone Models
The appeal of Lledo's Days Gone models lies in their ability to bring a little piece of the past into a collection. Launched in 1983 by former Matchbox executive Jack Odell and his business partner Burt Russell, the range took inspiration from earlier generations of miniature vintage vehicles, including the popular Matchbox Models of Yesteryear.
Many models featured delivery vans, buses and commercial vehicles inspired by transport from the early decades of the twentieth century. One particularly successful idea was to produce familiar vehicle designs carrying the names and advertising of real businesses. This created a huge variety of models, from household brands to local companies, making them appealing to collectors of both miniature vehicles and advertising memorabilia.
The Lledo name itself has an unusual story: it is Jack Odell's surname spelt backwards. The company built a strong following during the 1980s and 1990s, with its models often bought for display, collected as souvenirs or acquired as promotional gifts.
Today, these models appeal for several reasons. Some collectors enjoy the miniature vehicles themselves, while others are drawn to the familiar brand names and the memories they evoke of shops, products and businesses from earlier times. A model bearing a name such as Bird's Custard, Fry's or Pickfords can be a small reminder of Britain's commercial and everyday history, as well as an interesting addition to a vintage model collection.
Whether you're adding to an established collection or choosing a favourite because it reminds you of a particular brand or time in your life, these little vehicles offer a nostalgic glimpse into Britain's past.
