About This Curiosity

Sir Nathaniel was the final member of the Wade NatWest Pig family, awarded to young savers when their account reached the impressive milestone of £100. Completing the family, he was the ultimate reward for a child who had worked their way through the NatWest savings scheme. This example is in excellent condition. As with all the Wade NatWest Pigs, Sir Nathaniel was finished by hand, meaning each piece has its own individual characteristics. On this example, there is a slight imperfection in the casting of his left ear, which originated during manufacture and is part of his original production rather than subsequent damage. These small variations are part of what makes collecting vintage Wade pottery so appealing, giving each pig its own character and a little piece of manufacturing history to call its own.
Please note: The curiosities we sell are, by their nature, vintage or previously used items. They may show signs of age, require additional care when handling, displaying or storing them, and some may be fragile. Parts that were originally designed for practical use, such as handles, may no longer be strong enough to support an item's weight, and items may no longer function or perform as they were originally intended. Please handle all items with care and consider their age and condition before use.

Toys and Collectibles: Sebastian's Curiosities specialises in vintage items and collectibles intended for adult collectors, rather than toys for children. Even where an item was originally marketed as a toy, it is included in our collection because of its vintage or collectible interest. Such items should be treated as collectibles, are suitable for adults only, and should not be purchased for children or left within their reach.

Sebastian's Curiosity

Imagine the excitement of finally completing your NatWest Piggy Bank family!

For a young saver in the 1980s, reaching that final £100 milestone meant Sir Nathaniel was finally on his way, completing the original family of five. After starting with little Woody and gradually earning each new member as their savings grew, this was the ultimate reward for all those pennies and pounds carefully put aside.

One can only imagine the anticipation as those final few pounds were saved and the account balance crept towards £100. Perhaps some children proudly showed off their growing collection to friends at school, comparing how many pigs they had managed to collect. Did a little friendly rivalry develop, with everyone eager to be the first to bring Sir Nathaniel home? We can only speculate, but it's easy to imagine the pride a young saver might have felt displaying the complete family.

Whatever their personal story, these little ceramic pigs were more than just money boxes. They turned saving into a goal to work towards, and for many children, completing the family would have been a memorable childhood achievement.

The History Behind This Curiosity

Did you know that Sir Nathaniel was the final reward in the NatWest Pigs savings scheme?

For a young saver in the 1980s, reaching £100 was quite an achievement, and Sir Nathaniel was the prize that completed the family. Starting with Woody, the baby pig, savers could gradually collect the other members as their balances grew, eventually bringing home Lady Hilary, the mother of the family, and Sir Nathaniel, the father.

What makes collecting these vintage pigs particularly interesting is that, although they were produced as part of the same family, each was finished by hand. Even Sir Nathaniel, the grand finale of the collection, has his own little quirks and characteristics, giving him an individuality that has stayed with him from the day he left the factory.
